Creating a unique front page
This is a short post about the layout tool used to set up the front page for your game and how I used it to create a visually appealing front page for mine.
When I first used the layout tool for my demo many years ago, I didn’t really take full advantage of how dynamic you can make your page, because I wasn’t aware of its possibilities. So, for my new game, When You're Not Around, I wanted a front page that would use the entire screen, creating a unique and visually impressive design that could generate interest in my game.
Here we have the standard page with a banner on top, colored background, text on the left side, and screenshots on the right side.
I wanted to make it a more fluid experience where background, text, and screenshots were presented and tied together in a more linear visual flow centered in the middle of the page. So this is the page for my game:
For the top banner, I used a transparent PNG with the logo to make it blend better with the background. But why not integrate it directly into the background? Using an image for the top banner allows you to control how high or low your text starts, depending on the banner’s height.
Next, I added the background image, which required some trial and error. It needed to complement the logo and be as wide as possible to prevent the artwork from repeating. For me, a background size of 2560x1700px worked well. You could probably make it longer, but this size suited my needs.
Another feature I really liked was the ability to add an image with a link in the description section instead of placing a trailer on the right side alongside screenshots. By doing it this way you can make it look like a playable video, which I find more visually appealing and hopefully increases the chances that people will click on the trailer.
That was just a little something from me! I hope you found it interesting, and if you want it I could do a deeper dive into how to layout the front page for your game.
Thanks for reading! :-)
